Unbelievably, autumn is upon us. In the chaos of the last 18 months, winter and spring felt like they were pulled from under our feet. Summer gave many of us a short taste of normality, followed by a smattering of sunshine on a few lucky days.
While I can’t speak for everyone, barbecue season already feels long gone where we are in Scotland. Jumpers have been borrowed from the closet just a handful of months after they were returned. Iced coffees are beginning to induce shivers on their final sip.
If you’re reading this, I imagine you’re not entirely devastated by the change of seasons. Autumn is a favourite season for many bakers and home cooks: handmade breads are a welcome thought; the oven won’t heat up your whole house; and less of the dreaded melting.
Today I’m sharing 7 products to get your kitchen ready for autumn. These are perfect functional and decorative products, even if you’re not an all-out pumpkin or Halloween fanatic. You’ll find them all budget-friendly, or good investments for your cooking repertoire.
7 Products to Get Your Kitchen Ready for Autumn
1. Canned pumpkin puree
A baker’s kitchen should always have some pumpkin handy in autumn. The die-hards among you may love to roast and scoop the flesh of fresh pumpkins in the height of the season. Others (like me) much prefer the privilege of having our pumpkin pre-pureed.
Some big supermarkets in the UK carry these cans of sweet orange pulp, but they can also be found online.
If you’re making Pumpkin Pie, Pumpkin Spice Latte Cake, or something simpler like a Pumpkin Bread this season, you’ll want a tin or two. Use any leftover in cinnamon-spiked milkshakes, or stir it into warm porridge!
2. Monin Premium Pumpkin Spice Syrup
The iconic Pumpkin Spice Latte has returned to the chain coffee shops. While it’s a favourite of many, just as many of us are focused on saving our pennies this year. If you want the cosy treat of this sweet milky drink, you can make it at home too!
This Monin Pumpkin Spice Syrup can be seen in loads of chain and independent coffee shops. It can even be used in baking as well. Grab a bottle and you can enjoy a spiced drink in your own kitchen. You might like it a bit more or a bit less sweet than they sell them. You might like it with plant-based milk. You might like it iced. However you take your autumn drinks, a bottle of this will last ages and do just the job.
3. Nigel Slater’s Greenfeast; Autumn, Winter
Nigel Slater’s writing perfectly encapsulates the chilly seasons. No one quite evokes feelings from food like he does. His recent release, Greenfeast, was published as two separate books. One Spring/Summer cookbook wrapped in pink, sharing light and cool recipes. And this Autumn/Winter cookbook wrapped in orange, providing warm and comforting meal inspiration.
The second volume is a great purchase for cosy cooking. It’s entirely plant-based, meaning you’ll have loads of vegan and vegetarian options for wholesome dinners.
4. Staub Cocotte Cast Iron Pumpkin Pot
I couldn’t resist. Cast iron pots are lust worthy enough, but this particular pumpkin pot is an autumnal dream. It really dances that line between tacky and fabulous, as all good things do.
Imagine the soups, stews, and pie fillings you could cook up in this beauty. While it’s beyond the budget most of us have for replacing a knackered pan, cast iron pots are a great kitchen investment. They are incredibly durable, they can take really high heat, and they can cook just about anything.
5. Tart Tin
Speaking of great kitchen investments, tart tins are timeless. I’ve been using the same one for over 5 years and, aside from a few wee scratches, it works just as well as it did on day one.
Tart tins scream autumn, begging for a pumpkin pie or apple pie. Even if you prefer a savoury bake, these are ideal for a steak pie or chicken pie too! Once you get your hands on a couple of good pastry recipes, a tin like this will be such a handy addition to your baking toolkit.
6. Gizzi Erskine’s Season’s Eatings
Having a couple of great seasonal cookbooks is helpful when baking inspiration starts to run dry. This is one I love to flick through when the leaves start to change.
This book from Gizzi Erskine will have you covered from September right through to early January. Throughout the pages she captures gorgeous meals, snacks, and treats for all of the autumn and winter festivities.
7. Cauldron Mug
Finally, a treat for the true Halloween nuts among us. This one is perfect if you haven’t quite committed to full house decor, or can’t face the thought of having to find storage for more Halloween stuff.
Novelty mugs always hit the spot. This one is great for being perfectly festive and functional, but also subtle enough that it doesn’t need to be hidden away in your attic for the rest of the year!
So those are 7 products to get your kitchen ready for autumn, and to get you inspired for all the lovely festivity of the season. Get your oven preheated and let’s do some seasonal baking!
