Black Forest Breakfast Jars; chocolate, cherry and cream, all the delicious classic flavours of the famous gateaux in a healthy breakfast jar!
What’s a little bit old-school, full of chocolate and always irresistible after a nice meal?
No, it’s not me, it’s Black Forest Gateaux! (it totally is me, though)
Being a baking blog, it’s almost obligatory that I have a good BFG recipe for you all, but to be a GREAT baking blog, it only seems fair to have several.
While this fun little recipe isn’t gateaux, cake, or even dessert as such, it is still damn delicious. Also, it’s much less time-consuming than cake, and much more portable. So who is the real winner here?
These Black Forest Breakfast Jars are my new morning obsession. Do other people have obsessions for different times of day?
Layers of creamy natural yoghurt (or a dairy-free equivalent if you’re down with the cows), sweet seasonal dark cherries, and delicious chocolate granola. These jars are filling, healthy and above all, YUMMY.
As a trusty kitchen staple, I used my favourite Cacao Crazy chocolate granola from Breakfast By Bella in the Black Forest Breakfast Jars.
Of course, you can always use your favourite chocolate granola or cereal. Can you imagine how cute Coco Pops or Weetos could be in these jars??
These jars take just five minutes to throw together, and keep well in the fridge for days, meaning you can grab a great breakfast in a hurry the next morning. Plus these are very easy to customise to enjoy it your way.
If you enjoy one of these Black Forest Breakfast Jars straightaway, you’ll get a gorgeous crunch from the granola or cereal, a perfect contrast to the soft cherries and creamy yoghurt. However if you leave it overnight or for a day or two in the fridge, the granola or cereal will soften, giving it an almost layer-cake consistency (perfectly reminiscent of a proper BFG) and allowing all those chocolate-cherry flavours to mingle and develop. My WORD I’m hungry.
Now you don’t have to use those Instagram-perfect Mason jars that bloggers and other fancy-pants people like to use, trust me, they are too expensive sometimes. Two or three old jam jars will work just fine, and look just as pretty!
To make these super easy and delicious Black Forest Breakfast Jars, first look out some old jam jars or other medium sized glass jars. I used two, but you can use three if you would like smaller portions, or you only have small jars.
Simply dollop a few spoonfuls of yoghurt into the base of each jar. You can use plain natural or Greek yoghurt here, full or low fat is fine, but full fat always tastes better! Or if you’re not into plain yoghurt, vanilla or cherry flavoured yoghurt would work really well too!
Sprinkle over a layer of your chocolate granola or cereal. How thick yours layers are is totally up to you.
Add a layer of fresh or tinned cherries, this is easier if they are halved or quartered. Those pesky stones do get in the way, but the flavour is worth it!
Repeat these layers until the jars are full. I only had 2 of each layer in my jars, but feel free to make more!
Eat straightaway or screw on the lids and refrigerate until ready to eat. Having tried both ways, I think I prefer mine when left to chill and soften for a while, but try it however you like it.
I really enjoyed making and eating these, so expect some more fun portable breakfast ideas in the near future. Or at least until my home town gets so cold that I need piping hot porridge in the mornings just to keep me sane…
I hope you get a chance to try these Black Forest Breakfast Jars out, even if you just combine the flavours in a bowl at home instead of on the go!
Enjoy, and I’ll see you soon for more recipes, reviews and general foodie chat!
