Chocolate Chip Mocha Muffins; deeply chocolatey and deliciously moist coffee-shop-style muffins with a rich coffee undertone, laced with chocolate chips, and incidentally lower in price, fat and sugar than your regular coffee shop muffin!
Two coffee based recipes in a row?? Is my sleep deprivation showing yet?
In all seriousness, take a seat right now because these Chocolate Chip Mocha Muffins are about to knock you over if you don’t.
Coffee shop muffins are a joy to behold. Rounded tops overflowing their tightly ridged paper cases, teasing the sweet fluffiness of their interior behind the glass cabinet we stare at while we make our usual drink order. A far cry from the traditional plain English muffin, and yet still somewhat prudent when compared to the popular modern cupcake.
Are they a breakfast food, a snack, a dessert? Who knows? Who cares?
No matter what time you eat these Chocolate Chip Mocha Muffins, I’m almost positive you’ll love them. I’m a firm advocate of eating chocolate for breakfast anyway.
So what do they taste like? Moist, deeply chocolatey with rich cocoa powder and melting dark chocolate chips, mellow coffee flavour, and an impossibly fluffy crumb. Peeling off the crumb coated paper liner and biting in, you’ll be licking melted chocolate from your lips, and letting the richness of these muffins fill your delighted little mouth.
The muffins have that familiar coffee shop muffin smell too; invitingly sweet, and just the perfect match for a milky coffee.
As with other muffins, these Chocolate Chip Mocha Muffins incidentally contain less fat and sugar than a regular cake or cookie, but still taste wonderfully, satisfyingly indulgent.
I took a mindless bite of the one of first batch of these muffins before heading off to work one morning. Stopped in my tracks by that oven-fresh fluffiness and the melting pools of dark chocolate, there was no way I wasn’t devouring this whole thing. I’m glad I did, and I’m glad to say that the remaining muffins were snatched up in quick succession by my colleagues!
They are incredibly simple to make too. No need to decorate or faff about making icing for them, simply mix, bake and enjoy!

Notes
BE A MAVERICK: why not add some chopped hazelnuts to these muffins before baking?
Ingredients
- 210g (1 ½ cups) plain flour
- 40g (¼ cup) cocoa powder
- 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
- 120g (½ cup) caster sugar
- Pinch of salt
- 200ml (¾ cup) full fat milk
- 4 shots of espresso, or 2 tbsp instant coffee dissolved in 3 tbsp water
- 75ml (⅓ cup) vegetable oil (or melted butter left to cool slightly)
- 1 large egg
- 175g (1 cup) chocolate chips (I used dark chocolate chips)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven - 190°C / 170°C fan / 375ºF / gas mark 5 – and line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper, foil or silicone muffin cases.
- In a large bowl, measure the flour, cocoa, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, caster sugar and salt, and whisk together.
- In a separate bowl or large jug, whisk together the milk, coffee, oil and egg until combined.
- Pour the liquid mixture into the dry mixture and stir gently until everything is just combined. You don’t want to overmix as this can lead to dense, heavy muffins!
- Gently stir through the chocolate chips.
- Using a large spoon or ice cream scoop, spoon the batter into 9-12 muffin cases, depending on how large you would like your muffins to be.
- Bake in the oven for 22-27 minutes until well risen and springy to the touch.
- Once baked, remove form the oven and allow the muffins to cool for 10 minutes in their tin before removing and cooling completely on a wire rack.
Oh my goodness, be still, my beating heart – these look and sound SCRUMPTIOUS. I’m definitely going to have to have a go at making them!
