1. Electric Whisk
For bakers whose biceps are not made of cast iron, an electric whisk is essential. Whipping cream or egg whites by hand is a tedious and time-consuming task without one of these speedy kitchen gadgets.
Most are very affordable, and can be as plain or fancy as you desire. Most models even come with different whisk or mixing attachments for different purposes Any baking enthusiast would be delighted to receive one of these, as they are always helpful.
2. Mixing Bowls
If you know a messy baker, there’s every chance that they never have enough bowls. When making multi-coloured cakes or layered traybakes, it’s a lot easier if you have a nice array of mixing bowls in different sizes. It’s an extra bonus if they are of a decent quality, like these ones.
3. Nigella Lawson’s How To Be A Domestic Goddess
Words cannot do justice to the admiration I have for this woman. A proud feature of British bookshelves and TV screens since the late 1990s, Nigella is an icon, and deservedly so. Her books give realistic advice, recipes that never fail , and serve as a trusty resource of the proud unprofessional cook. Her dessert recipes are the main focus of this particular book, teaching us all how to make a sultry finisher to any meal. This volume is a classic from her works.
4. Cake Stand
The only thing more enjoyable than eating a delicious cake that you’ve just made, is showing off to people just how delicious it is before you eat it!
If the baker in your life loves to display their treats, or to sweeten up their Instagram feed with pictures of their creations, a pretty cake stand is a must. Some can be surprisingly expensive, but you definitely don’t have to splurge to find a nice one.
5. KitchenAid Freestanding Mixer
Obviously, this is the most expensive gift in this baking gift guide, for good reason. A freestanding mixer, especially from a reliable brand like KitchenAid, is a lifesaver in a baker’s kitchen.
Not only do they look impressive on a kitchen work top, they are one of the most useful tools a busy baking enthusiast can acquire. Most models come with a range of attachments and can mix, whip or beat things in minutes. They are often much sturdier than handheld mixers and whisks, meaning they can take on the burden of large quantities of frosting, dough or batter with ease. I was gifted a freestanding mixer over five years ago, and it has never failed me. These are a worthwhile investment, especially if your baking friend or family member likes to share their creations!
6. Hairy Bikers’ Big Book of Baking
The Hairy Bikers are a mainstay on British TV, mostly because of their amusing double act title, but also because they really know their stuff when it comes to food. This book journals their cross-country trip around Europe, learning about and sampling the best baked goods in each nation. From simple German breads to an utterly unbeatable Italian Gianduja Cake, it should provide plenty of inspiration to any budding baker.
7. Electronic Thermometer
I cannot stress the importance of this tool in any kitchen, especially for bakers. Testing the inside temperature of a pie, or the boiling point of caramel is both dangerous and borderline impossible to do without a good thermometer.
These gadgets provide an instant exact reading of whatever you’re testing. No more squinting at an old-fashioned dial, or having to cut things open to check if they’re ready. The prong also doubles as a handy cake-tester instead of going through loads of cocktail sticks and wooden skewers to check if a cake has cooked! Any baking enthusiast would be grateful to receive one of these.
8. Apron
Baking is a messy business. Flour and icing sugar are always waiting patiently to jump out of a mixing bowl and ruin your top. Aprons are always good to have, even in a home kitchen. Whether just to protect your clothes, hold something in a pocket, or just to wipe sticky chocolatey fingers on when there isn’t a towel to hand! Buying the baking nerd in your life a nice apron is something that will definitely be appreciated, both by them and the poor souls they live with!
9. Measuring Spoons
This may seem ludicrously simple but, much like my earlier recommendation to buy mixing bowls, measuring spoons are always required. Following any American or Canadian recipe can require the use of cup measures and loads of different-sized measuring spoons. Even following British recipes usually requires an accurate tablespoon or teaspoon measurement at some stage. They aren’t the most exciting of gifts, but they are wonderfully practical and reliable. Plus, there are some really pretty ones out there!
10. James Mortons’ How Baking Works
This is easily one of the most useful and informative books I have ever owned. The follow up to (the also hugely informative) Bread, this book gives the reader a no-nonsense guide to baking pretty much everything. James takes you through the intricate science of French macarons, to the art of a rustic gooey homemade brownie. I refer to this book all the time when trying out new methods or recipes, and it always has an answer for me. It would be a great addition to any baker’s bookshelf.
With that, we reach the end of 10 Christmas Gifts for Bakers 2019. I hope this has given you some inspiration, or just a link to a last-minute gift!
