2020 hasn’t been the best of years, for any of us.

Small businesses in particular have been hit hard by the fallout of the pandemic, being forced to innovate to survive. Fortunately, some have achieved great things with this push for creativity and invention. With online businesses and delivery services being launched with great success, things aren’t looking as dreary as some may have expected.

Pleesecakes, the kings of droolworthy Instagram-famous desserts, are one of these success stories.

The guys at Pleesecakes have launched their Build Your Own At Home (BYOAH) kits. You can assemble, show off and enjoy your very own Pleesecake in the comfort of your own kitchen. All for less than £35!

They were kind enough to gift me one of these kits in return for some exposure, and I was more than happy to oblige. Obviously, the Fully Loaded Cheesecake caught my eye.

The BYOAH kit arrived in a big polystyrene box. This box contained everything I needed to assemble this incredibly eye-catching dessert. From the full frozen cheesecake and ganache to all the sweet chocolatey toppings. The kit also comes with full illustrated instructions as to how to make a Pleesecakes Cheesecake, and how to store and enjoy it.

All you have to do is unwrap your frozen cheesecake of choice, attach it to your serving board, melt and spread over your ganache, before topping it with a ridiculous amount of delicious treats. You can check out the Pleesecakes guys on YouTube for a video tutorial too, or watch me assemble the Pleesecakes Cheesecake on my YouTube channel!

How does it look?

The Fully Loaded Cheesecake is just that, fully fully loaded.

The sheer height of this dessert is something you have to admire. Topped with an almost excessive amount of chocolate, this is not one for the faint of heart

Colour contrasts between the different chocolate toppings, the crumbs, the ganache, the cheesecake itself, and the biscuit base are truly beautiful. Different shades of rich browns and beiges wake up all those pleasure centres in your brain.

Admittedly, the cheesecake began to slump a little bit under the weight of the toppings when left in the fridge overnight (though this may also be because I didn’t chill it fast enough after filming and photographing it!). Also, slicing this beast of a dessert is a bit of a challenge. But who doesn’t love a bit of a challenge now and again?

How did it taste?

The salted caramel cheesecake is actually much lighter than it may appear. It has a good tanginess of soft cheese to it, that melts into a gorgeous salty-burnt-sugar flavour. Nothing overwhelmingly rich or sweet, which was a nice surprise. The salt to sugar balance is just right, and it isn’t as ridiculously dense as some no-bake cheesecakes can be.

The double chocolate biscuit base is a real highlight. Rather than the flavour of some weak cheap chocolate digestive biscuits, this biscuit base is every bit as rich as a brownie. It is firm enough to stand up to the soft cheesecake, without being tooth-shatteringly crunchy. It has a deep cocoa flavour that balances out the sweetness of the cheesecake very well. It’s also generously thick, meaning it doesn’t get lost under the filling.

The ganache is darker than some milk chocolate ganaches, which I was very pleased about. It offers a welcome deep chocolate flavour amongst the caramel, without overwhelming it.

I must admit, I enjoy the appearance of the toppings more than the consumption. Once some of these chocolate bars have been in the fridge, they can become a bit too hard and can become a jarring texture against the rest of the cheesecake. However, it adds an extra bit of joy when serving up different slices and being able to give people their favourite treats.
